Co-founded by Charles Koppelman , Select Records head Martin Bandier and Stephen Swid who purchased the music publishing unit of CBS Records in 1986. The trio founded SBK (4) as a production company in 1989 prior to selling it to EMI and launching the Capitol Records -distributed label.

It was consolidated with Chrysalis and EMI Records USA to create EMI Record Group USA in 1994.

The label's artists included Vanilla Ice , Jon Secada , Wilson Phillips , Blur , Technotronic , Billy Dean , Lonnie Gordon , Boy George , Jesus Jones , Selena and actress Milla Jovovich .
